3D Printed Cycle Storage System Can Park Your Bike on a Tree

What way of traveling is very hipster-ish? Easy, going by bike: a fixed-gear bike. However, the only problem with these bicycles is that you can’t easily store them in your office or barn without losing a lot of space. And that is when Vancouver-based company Hurdler Studios comes in. This studio created the solution to this first-world problem and it’s called The Clug.

So what is it? The product consists of two objects, which can be screwed into the wall. They are capable of holding each bicycle, enabling the bike to stand to the wall. The project is currently on Kickstarter, where the team is seeking funds. They initially 3D printed the product and the first group of backers will get a 3D printed version of The Clug. Hurdler Studios wants to turn to more traditional ways of manufacturing in the future in order to reduce costs. On its Kickstarter page, the team explains why they came up with the idea:

“We all cycle into the office but where to store them all became a problem, it really started to look a little messy. When we looked a little further we saw the same thing elsewhere too… We considered installing a winch system, or some clever hooks, but being designers and with our 3D printer so close to hand we thought we’d see what we could come up with to solve the problem for ourselves. Holding the bike in roughly the position we wanted it to be in, it became fairly obvious that all that was needed to keep it there was a very small attachment to the wall so we set about defining exactly what that attachment would be. And the result is CLUG.”

The Clug now has the same effect as a bike rack, but the product consists of two pieces. they are called the clipper and the gripper. Because they can be screwed into almost anything it is even possible to screw them into a tree. The team did it in its accompanying video and so managed to ‘park’ a bicycle on a tree. And below you can see it also works on a mountain. It’s even possible to screw them into a ceiling in order to save extra space in a room. And that’s exactly what it all comes down to eventually: saving space.

Whenever someone comes up with a good idea, there are lots of people embracing the concept. It now happens for Hurdler Studios on Kickstarter. With still 25 days to go, they’ve been funded for almost 26,000 CAD, with the purpose of reaching 32,000 CAD in the end. The Vancouver-based company will probably have a busy summer printing out all of these Clugs, as it’s very likely for them to outstrip their financial goals and to massively top up this sum of money.
